Description:

Clay tobacco pipe with oval bowl, heel and straight stem with smoothly cut stem end. Bowl in relief on the left in a standing oval a seated Mercury on a bale of merchandise on which the mouldmaker's signature "P.S.", bowl on the right in a standing oval seated Neptune as a river god with trident, bowl stem side a standing lion turned to the left, bowl reverse a standing oval coat of arms of Gouda , four buttons along the bowl opening from which garlands hang, heel left with Goud's coat of arms. Stem both sides winding tendril with leaf branch at the end lengthwise left "A. SPARNAAY" and right "IN:GOUDA". Decorated with a paper tendril of cut green material with silver flowers in between and two wax hands in the centre, all secured with a red ribbon. Original cardboard box with a sheet of white paper with an embossed openwork edge on the bottom, cotton wool on top, written in black ink in the lid "17 JUNY 1843 SILVERNE BRUILOFT VAN PIETER DIEDERICH CONTZE EN ANNA JACOBA MULDER", the outside of the box covered with marbled paper.
