Description:

Carved wooden countertop statuette depicting a standing Indian, possibly Powhatan, the arms spread from the body with bunches of tobacco leaves in both hands, around the head a wreath of feathers, dressed in a skirt of feathery leaves, around the upper and lower arms and above the calf bracelets, the feet in high shoes, the pedestal round and undecorated.

Bijschrift door Tiemen Kimm bij presentatie bij Niemeyer: Winkelbeeldje, voorstellende Pocahontas, begin 18e eeuw, Engels. De dochter van het Indiaanse opperhoofd Powhatan trouwde in 1614 met de Engelsman John Rolfe. In 1617 stierf ze tijdens een bezoek aan Engeland, Pocahontas werd in de Verenigde Staten het tabakssymbool. De huid van dit beeldje is later zwart overgeschilderd (bij de restauratie is de linker helft zwart gelaten!). Men heeft destijds getracht het Indiaanse vrouwtje te veranderen in een Moriaan!
Qua uitvoering lijkt dit beeldje overigens veel meer op de weergave van Powhatan zoals deze afgebeeld is door John Smith in de Map of Virginia in 1608.
