| In zijn verkoopcataligus (Le Grenier du Collectionneur, nr 43, 1980, lot 168) noemt Jean-Léo deze pijp "LE CHEF BLANC" met als toelichting: Tête de pipe artisanale nègre d'une colonie française (probablem. A.O.F.). Délassant la technique habituelle de son ethnie: un noir colonisé s'est littéralement "payé la tête" d'un officier français dont il a su rendre les particularités physiques qui l 'ont frappé: le nez long & fin, la bouche aux lèvres minces, les jeux bleus (incrustés), le képi rejeté en arrières complète le portrait.
