Summer Closure

Summer Closure

Although we usually prefer to be open throughout the summer months to accommodate the higher number of museum visitors, things are different this year. The municipality of Amsterdam has decided to close off the section of the canal and street where we are located during Gay Pride in order to construct a VIP area with an open-air grandstand. The delivery of materials and construction work will begin two weeks in advance, causing disruption due to building traffic. We tried to stay open, but the museum and shop will now be forced to close from July 29 through August 3, 2026. This gives the staff a chance to take a few days off.

Pipes on the Moselle

Pipes on the Moselle

During a trip to the Eifel region, we visited the Mittelmosel Museum, located - as the name suggests - right on the banks of the Moselle River. To our surprise, the attic level housed a display case filled with locally excavated clay pipes. It featured countless familiar shapes alongside some unique local variations, including even some previously unknown Jonas pipes. These pieces were crafted by regional makers but were clearly inspired by Dutch examples. It just goes to show that, even after fifty years of researching pipes, there is always something new to discover.

Cultural Governance

Cultural Governance

Clear guidelines have been established to ensure good governance within the cultural sector, summarized in the Cultural Governance Code. Similar frameworks exist for businesses, lawyers, and many other professional groups. Our museum did not yet fully comply with these standards, partly due to a few board vacancies. This has recently been resolved through the appointment of new board members. Benedict Goes, who has been involved for so long, is no longer a board member but remains active as the museum’s manager. The Amsterdam Pipe Museum is thus once again fully compliant with all regulations.

Turmac Factory Zevenaar

Turmac Factory Zevenaar

The local museum of Zevenaar is housed in the former Turmac factory, known for its cigarettes in beautiful packaging with Oriental motifs. After the factory closed, the building was renamed the Turmac Culture Factory, a welcoming home for the Liemers Museum, as well as the archive, library, and much more. One section of the museum is dedicated to the former cigarette factory. Various videos bring the history of this company to life, which was by far the city's largest employer at the time. A nice tip for the summer holidays!
